A Proud History of Innovation

1962
Originally known as Aqua Tec Corp., the company that became Water Pik, Inc. was founded in Fort Collins, Colorado by hydraulic engineer John Mattingly and dentist Gerald Moyer. The two collaborated to create an oral irrigator for use in dentistry. On their 146th try, the inventors hollowed out a piston and developed a motorized oral irrigation device that did not leak.

1967
The oral irrigator received its initial patent. Today's Waterpik® Water Flosser is based upon the same principle and design as the original model — a powerful miniature pump sends a pulsating jet of water through a plastic syringe-like tip to clean the teeth. Consumers could now purchase an oral irrigator in department, drug, appliance, and hardware stores.

1973
Water Pik introduced the Original Shower Massage®, the first massaging shower head. This new invention drew on the technology of the Water Pik by leveraging the pulsating sprays of the oral irrigator. The Original Shower Massage quickly became the market leader in shower heads.

1980-2000
Water Pik's original inventions led to new products and design innovations. With hundreds of patents and an engineering staff dedicated to enhancing the Water Pik product line, the company introduced products such as an award-winning electric toothbrush, the Flexible Shower Massage, and plaque removal systems during the 1980's and 1990's. Our original inventions and these advances inspired the products introduced during the company's more recent history in the 2000's.

2003
Water Pik introduced its first EcoFlow® water-saving shower head. The innovative EcoFlow technology reduced water consumption to save on energy bills. Conservation without compromise means that EcoFlow products, which continue to be enhanced and available today, are designed to conserve while providing a refreshing shower experience.

2004
The first cordless Waterpik® Water Flosser was introduced. The rechargeable, battery operated units are compact and portable for those who need to water floss away from home. They are also ideal for people who prefer a cordless design.

2005
The 50th clinical study proving the efficacy of the Waterpik® Water Flosser was completed. One of the first studies showing calculus and gingivitis reductions was published in 1969. Now, more than 50 studies have been conducted in more than 25 independent and university-based research centers.

2006
Water Pik launched the next-generation Waterpik® Ultra Water Flosser. Smaller and quieter than previous models, the Ultra features ten pressure settings, a contemporary design, a covered reservoir with in-lid tip storage, and six unique water flossing tips.

2007
The Waterpik® Sensonic® Professional, an advanced sonic electric toothbrush, was introduced. Providing state-of-the-art sonic technology for powerful, yet gentle plaque removal, it has a bristle speed 25% faster than other sonic toothbrushes. The toothbrush features three brush options, a 30-second quadrant timer, and 2-minute brushing timer.

2008
Water Pik developed the EasySelect® shower head product line. EasySelect® improves the shower experience by moving the spray mode selector into a much more convenient location, which makes changing the spray pattern significantly easier.

2009
The Water Flosser product name was launched. The Waterpik® Water Flosser is the next generation of Waterpik® oral health care products. It uses pulsating water to clean deep between teeth and below the gumline where traditional brushing and flossing can't reach, and it is clinically proven to be even more effective than traditional string floss.

2010
Water Pik announced its first line of sinus wash products, Waterpik® SinuSense™. A brand new category for Water Pik, SinuSense™ reinvents the traditional neti pot and squeeze bottle and introduces the neti bottle and water pulsator to allergy, cold, flu, and sinus sufferers. The new family of products is designed for an all-natural approach to sinus rinse.

2011
Water Pik introduced the Waterpik® Water Flosser For Kids and Waterpik® Traveler™. The Water Flosser For Kids is customized for children ages 6+, and it is perfect for kids who have braces or trouble flossing. The Traveler™ features a compact design that is ideal for smaller bathrooms and traveling. It's global voltage compatibility allows it to operate in any country.
